As part of worldwide activities to celebrate the 50 years of space exploration, Polish children and students presented their ideas on the next 50 years in space and got a chance to meet with astronauts.
At a two-day conference last week in Warsaw, Poland, called ‘Space for humans – the past 50 years and beyond’ children and students had the chance to meet European and American astronauts to hear at first hand about living and working in space.

The first day was mainly for high-school school children and university students, who listened to lectures on space exploration, international cooperation and the solar system by ESA, Russian and NASA experts, as well as the Chairman of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

On the second day, Polish children and young students were invited to join a competition to present their ideas on the next 50 years of space exploration. Shannon Lucid, an American astronaut, and Jean-Pierre Haigneré, a European astronaut, awarded the winners with telescopes, ESA school atlases and other prizes. The children had many questions on the experience of living in space and how to become an astronaut.

Poland already has many space activities and works with ESA on many projects. Who knows, maybe one of these children will be lucky enough to travel to space!
