Il primo satellite Sentinel del programma di osservazione terrestre dell'ESA ha raggiunto la base di lancio di Kourou, in Guyana francese (Sud America). Dopo sette anni di progettazione, assemblaggio e collaudo, Sentinel-1A sar\u00e0 lanciato con un vettore Soyuz il 3 aprile 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Al momento del lancio, il satellite avr\u00e0 il peso relativamente modesto di 2,3 tonnellate. Sentinel-1A presenta una struttura piuttosto insolita, con due ali solari da 10 metri e un'antenna radar da 12 metri. Le celle solari e l'antenna saranno ripiegate in modo da poter essere stipate in uno speciale involucro protettivo, situato nel \"naso\" del vettore. Al rilascio del satellite nello spazio, ali e antenna si dispiegheranno insieme secondo una sequenza accuratamente programmata, il cui svolgimento richieder\u00e0 circa 10 ore.<\/p>\n

I dati di Sentinel-1A potranno essere utilizzati per numerose attivit\u00e0. Ad esempio, consentiranno di mappare le variazioni della calotta glaciale artica, di rilevare gli sversamenti di petrolio nei mari o di localizzare la posizione delle navi.
