On 20 and 21 May 2024, 17 Climate Detective teams\u00a0\u2013 each\u00a0representing\u00a0a country\u00a0from across Europe\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0gathered together\u00a0for an incredible Learning and Celebration Event, held at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/About_Us\/ESRIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESA&#8217;s European Space Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0(ESRIN)\u00a0in Frascati, Italy\u00a0\u2013 the house of Earth\u00a0observation!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" data-width=\"2000\" data-credit=\"ESA\" data-detail-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2024\/05\/Poster_session_at_the_Climate_Detectives_Learning_and_Celebration_Event_2024\" data-licence=\"ESA Standard Licence\" data-licence-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Terms_and_conditions_of_use_of_images_and_videos_available_on_the_esa_website\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width:100%;height:auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2024\/05\/poster_session_at_the_climate_detectives_learning_and_celebration_event_2024\/26105869-5-eng-GB\/Poster_session_at_the_Climate_Detectives_Learning_and_Celebration_Event_2024.jpg\" alt=\"Student teams got a chance to present their projects for the Climate Detectives 2023\/2024 edition during a poster session at the Learning and Celebration Event 2024\"><figcaption>Student teams got a chance to present their projects for the Climate Detectives 2023\/2024 edition during a poster session at the Learning and Celebration Event 2024<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The students that attended were between the ages of 12 and 19, and had all completed a Climate Detectives project. They investigated a climate or environmental issue and, to do so, they used real satellite images or even collected their own data. Here are three examples:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>The Gymn\u00e1zium Po\u0161tov\u00e1 9 team from Slovakia measured air quality in nearby cities and the countryside, and shared ideas to increase the use of renewable energy sources.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Climate Detectives from IES El Torrell\u00f3 in Spain used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/kids\/en\/learn\/Earth\/Climate_change\/Europe_s_space_Sentinels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sentinel-2 satellite<\/a> data to investigate the impact of fires and heavy rain, and thought of different ways to help protect their local communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Students from Ecole Sainte-Sophie de Luxembourg explored waste in the oceans, and carried out a clever experiment to see how plastic degrades in water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" data-width=\"2000\" data-credit=\"ESA\" data-detail-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2024\/05\/Workshops_for_the_Climate_Detectives_at_ESRIN_2024\" data-licence=\"ESA Standard Licence\" data-licence-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Terms_and_conditions_of_use_of_images_and_videos_available_on_the_esa_website\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width:100%;height:auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2024\/05\/workshops_for_the_climate_detectives_at_esrin_2024\/26106168-3-eng-GB\/Workshops_for_the_Climate_Detectives_at_ESRIN_2024.jpg\" alt=\"Students learned more about Earth observation, importance of satellites, and how to use satellite data during hands-on workshops at the Climate Detectives Learning and Celebration Event 2024.\"><figcaption>Students learned more about Earth observation, importance of satellites, and how to use satellite data during hands-on workshops at the Climate Detectives Learning and Celebration Event 2024.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Climate Detectives Learning and Celebration Event 2024 was all about recognising the Climate Detectives\u2019 hard work and accomplishments. They enjoyed inspiring presentations and fascinating hands-on workshops related to Earth sciences, as well as interacting with Earth experts from ESA. They then learned about ESA\u2019s Earth Observation programme, and even got to visit the \u03a6-Experience, which is a special room with unique soundscapes and interactive displays!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to all the students that took part in the Climate Detectives project in 2023-2024, helping us to learn more about our incredible planet.
