This will be the first time ever an Italian astronaut performs a spacewalk!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The spacewalk will begin at 14:55 CEST when Luca\u2019s partner Chris Cassidy opens the hatch and ventures out into the void. Luca will follow a few minutes later. Chris will be identified by the red stripe on his suit, while Luca\u2019s suit will be plain white.<\/p>\n<p>Before the spacewalk begins, Luca and Chris will spend several hours preparing their spacesuits and the emergency systems that would enable them to return to the Station in the event of a problem. Once everything is checked, the pair can begin their six-hour excursion.<\/p>\n<p>Their tasks include laying cable routings for the future Russian Nauka laboratory module, installing and replacing communication and heat management systems, and retrieving a camera and experiments for return to Earth.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" data-width=\"1500\" data-credit=\"ESA\/NASA\" data-detail-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Images\/2013\/07\/Preparing_for_spacewalks2\" data-licence=\"ESA Standard Licence\" data-licence-url=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/ESA_Multimedia\/Terms_and_conditions_of_use_of_images_and_videos_available_on_the_esa_website\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"max-width:100%;height:auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2013\/07\/preparing_for_spacewalks2\/17907828-2-eng-GB\/Preparing_for_spacewalks.jpg\" alt=\"Preparing for spacewalks\"><figcaption>Preparing for spacewalks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Part of Luca\u2019s work will involve standing on a work platform on the Station\u2019s robotic arm under the control of NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg inside the Cupola observation module.<\/p>\n<p>Their long day will finish around 23:00 CEST, when they return inside the ISS. Tomorrow will be a quiet day for them. This will allow them to recover and begin preparing for their second spacewalk in mid-July.<\/p>\n<p>Luca has promised to share his experiences with us as soon as possible after his walk on Twitter.
