El primero de los nuevos sat\u00e9lites de observaci\u00f3n terrestre de la ESA, los Sentinel, acaba de partir hacia Sudam\u00e9rica rumbo al Puerto Espacial Europeo de Kur\u00fa, en la Guayana Francesa. Tras siete a\u00f1os de dise\u00f1o, montaje y pruebas, el Sentinel-1A viajar\u00e1 al espacio a bordo de un cohete Soyuz el 3 de abril de 2014.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

El primer Sentinel, que pesar\u00e1 tan solo 2,3 toneladas en el momento del lanzamiento, tiene un dise\u00f1o poco com\u00fan que incluye dos paneles solares y una antena de radar de 10 y 12 m de longitud respectivamente. Tanto los paneles como la antena estar\u00e1n plegados para que quepan en la carcasa protectora situada en la proa del cohete. Cuando el Sentinel-1A se ponga en \u00f3rbita, ambos componentes se desplegar\u00e1n en una secuencia cuidadosamente planificada que tardar\u00e1 unas 10 horas en finalizar.<\/p>\n

Once it becomes operational, Sentinel-1A\u2019s advanced radar instrument will image Earth’s surface 24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of whether it is cloudy or dark.<\/p>\n

Los datos del sat\u00e9lite se utilizar\u00e1n para actividades muy diversas. Rastrear\u00e1 los cambios en la capa de hielo del \u00c1rtico, buscar\u00e1 vertidos de petr\u00f3leo en los mares e incluso detectar\u00e1 embarcaciones. Tambi\u00e9n estudiar\u00e1 el suelo y los recursos h\u00eddricos y forestales. De hecho, es el \u00fanico sat\u00e9lite europeo especialmente dise\u00f1ado para dar respuesta r\u00e1pida a situaciones de emergencia tales como las inundaciones o los terremotos.<\/p>\n

El a\u00f1o que viene est\u00e1 previsto el lanzamiento de un segundo Sentinel id\u00e9ntico al primero. Juntos continuar\u00e1n proporcionando la larga lista de estudios de radar que iniciaron el ERS-1, el ERS-2 y el Envisat.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
