Thomas erwarb 2001 einen Master in Mechanik für Raumfahrtsysteme und Raumflugkörper. 2006 schloss er die Flugschule der Air France ab.
Between 2002 and 2004, Thomas worked at the French space agency as a research engineer. He was then selected for Air France’s flight training programme and went on to become a commercial pilot. He has logged more than 2000 hours flying time on various commercial airliners.
Im Mai 2009 wurde Thomas als ESA-Astronaut ausgewählt.
