I s t\u011bmi nejv\u011bt\u0161\u00edmi dalekohledy je velmi obt\u00ed\u017en\u00e9 rozeznat na Marsu n\u011bjak\u00e9 detaily. Na konci 19. stolet\u00ed se n\u011bkte\u0159\u00ed v\u011bdci domn\u00edvali, \u017ee na povrchu planety vid\u00ed rovn\u00e9 \u010d\u00e1ry. Tyto \u010d\u00e1ry spojovaly nazelenal\u00e9 oblasti, kter\u00e9 vypadaly, jako by byly pokryty rostlinami. Tito v\u011bdci se domn\u00edvali, \u017ee tyto rovn\u00e9 \u010d\u00e1ry jsou kan\u00e1ly vybudovan\u00e9 Mar\u0165any k zavla\u017eov\u00e1n\u00ed jejich plodin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sn\u00edmky z kosmick\u00fdch sond uk\u00e1zaly, \u017ee tyto kan\u00e1ly neexistuj\u00ed. Na planet\u011b nejsou \u017e\u00e1dn\u00e9 zn\u00e1mky \u017eivota \u2013 ani rostlin, ani inteligentn\u00edch Mar\u0165an\u016f. Dnes v\u00edme, \u017ee Mars je velmi chladn\u00e1 a such\u00e1 planeta, na jej\u00edm\u017e povrchu nem\u016f\u017ee existovat kapaln\u00e1 voda. Na pol\u00e1rn\u00edch \u010depi\u010dk\u00e1ch se v\u0161ak nach\u00e1zej\u00ed rozs\u00e1hl\u00e9 oblasti vodn\u00edho ledu. Hodn\u011b ledu je tak\u00e9 v zamrzl\u00e9 p\u016fd\u011b \u2013 podobn\u011b jako v oblastech permafrostu na severu Kanady a Ruska.<\/p>\n

Rozs\u00e1hl\u00e9 vyschl\u00e9 koryta tak\u00e9 sv\u011bd\u010d\u00ed o tom, \u017ee na povrchu kdysi teklo velk\u00e9 mno\u017estv\u00ed vody. Nejnov\u011bj\u0161\u00ed v\u00fdsledky sondy Mars Express a dal\u0161\u00edch kosmick\u00fdch sond nazna\u010duj\u00ed, \u017ee hluboko pod povrchem by se mohla nach\u00e1zet kapaln\u00e1 voda. Pokud byl Mars kdysi teplej\u0161\u00ed a vlh\u010d\u00ed, mohl se na t\u00e9to \u010derven\u00e9 planet\u011b objevit \u017eivot. Pod zamrzl\u00fdm povrchem by mohly dodnes existovat jednoduch\u00e9 formy \u017eivota, jako jsou bakterie.<\/p>\n

V roce 1996 skupina v\u011bdc\u016f ozn\u00e1mila sv\u011btu, \u017ee objevila stopy bakteri\u00ed uvnit\u0159 meteoritu poch\u00e1zej\u00edc\u00edho z Marsu. Tato teorie v\u0161ak u v\u011bt\u0161iny ostatn\u00edch v\u011bdc\u016f nenach\u00e1z\u00ed p\u0159\u00edli\u0161nou podporu.
